In the spring of 2015, the FAA issued a proposed rule outlining its safety plan for uncrewed aircraft systems (UASs). Of major concern to helicopter operators was sharing airspace with these new drone entrants. HAI WAS THERE to engage this new sector and work collaboratively with UAS operators and manufacturers toward rules that keep all vertical aviation aircraft safe in the skies.

Matt Zuccaro, HAI’s president at the time, represented the helicopter industry on the government/industry task force established to advise the US Department of Transportation on UAS registration and exemptions. That same year, HAI endorsed the Know Before You Fly campaign developed for UAS operators and sponsored by the FAA.

UAS programs at HAI grew substantially in the years following. Articles in ROTOR magazine addressed the many sides of this nascent industry and its impact on helicopter operations. The association formed a UAS committee that evolved into the UAS Working Group. And HAI HELI-EXPO® has hosted numerous programs dedicated to the subject.

In 2016, HAI members voted to create a UAS category of membership, and our annual exposition began to feature drone exhibits.

As technology grows in vertical aviation, HAI will be there, continuing to work with industry and policymakers to safely integrate new aircraft into the airspace.

This year, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of HAI, formed on Dec. 13, 1948.

Countdown to HAI’s 75th: 2 days!
