HAI WAS THERE in 2009 when the US Joint Helicopter Safety Analysis Team (JHSAT), a working group of the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST), published its findings indicating that improved training and risk-based safety management would be the best prevention for most accidents.
HAI cochaired the JHSAT and was instrumental in the formation of the IHST in 2005. Of course, HAI had long before recognized the link between education and safety. In fact, in 1970, HAI, then known as Helicopter Association of America (HAA), presented the first HAA Helicopter Operators Management Course. The second management course, held in conjunction with the association’s Annual Meeting in 1972, was an academic and financial success. Twenty-three people completed the course, and education went on to become a fixture of the annual gathering and HAI HELI-EXPO®.
This year, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of HAI, formed on Dec. 13, 1948.
