To better support the various sectors of the vertical aviation industry, HAI WAS THERE to develop specialized working groups to address some of the industry’s biggest challenges and member concerns. Created decades ago, these working groups have provided HAI members with a forum to help guide the association in the right direction, tackling the industry’s biggest issues. The association currently benefits from 14 working groups, all of which provide valuable insights into a wide range of topics. One of those specialized groups is the Utility, Patrol, and Construction (UPAC) Working Group.
HAI established the UPAC Working Group to promote the safe use of helicopters in all applications within the utility industry, including patrol, inspection, and construction. One of the main goals of this working group is to develop and promote safe practices and guidelines for helicopter operations in the utility environment. It identifies and advises the HAI Board of Directors and membership on potential administrative, operational, and safety concerns affecting aerial work operations.
Notably, the UPAC Working Group is credited with producing HAI’s internationally recognized UPAC Safety Guide for Helicopter Operators, which offers general information, best practices, and recommendations to mitigate risks for individuals and companies involved in utility (power-line or pipeline) patrol and inspections, as well as power-line construction and related maintenance operations. Members interested in finding out more can visit the HAI website to view the list of current UPAC Working Group members and the group’s Guidelines and Procedures Manual.
This year, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of HAI, formed on Dec. 13, 1948.
